RainsFlo
ENGINEERED HIGH PERFORMANCE SEALING

for all compression packing applications in pumps,
process equipment, and valves

Continuing demand for technological improvements in pumps and process equipment has brought about the necessity for improvement in sealing performance. Higher shaft speeds, pressures, and temperatures require an engineered approach to packing and sealing.

The superior results obtained by Rains-Flo Sealing Systems are due to the unique mechanical structure of the Rains-Flo Sealing Products. Rains-Flo GFM packings "set-up" into a bearing-like seal and gland forces are transmitted directly to the stuffing box base as well as along the shaft/sleeve. The Rains-Flo Collar at the base of the stuffing box is always activated and lubricated (even at shutdown), thereby, keeping the quantity and size of abrasives entering the stuffing box to a minimum, as well as causing pumpage pressure to drop at the stuffing box base.

Engineered Sealing Benefits

1.

Proper activation is assured at the base of the stuffing box where pressure and contamination control is most critical to performance.
2. Unique mechanical and material structure close to the gland nose inhibits the sleeve scoring so common with conventional packings.
3. GFM Packings take the wear – thereby extending shaft/sleeve life. Through "Add-A-Ring Maintenance", packing wear is accommodated and sealing control is maintained.
4. Where flushing and lantern rings are required to minimize pumpage entry into the stuffing box, Rains-Flo Sealing Systems provide the lowest leakage. Hence, flush is better utilized and directed to accomplish its intended purpose.

The reason behind the widespread success and continued use of Rains-Flo GFM (Granulated, Flowable, Metallic) packings are:

  • The least shaft/sleeve wear obtainable with any packing – a key feature for large diameter shafts in process equipment. The ability to inhibit shaft grooving keeps leakage rates to the lowest possible level. Shutdown time for critical production equipment in order to remetalize shafts or change sleeves is minimized.
  • The self-lubricating and heat conducting features may permit the elimination of lantern rings and supplemental lubrication. Asbestos and plastic fiber type packings are heat-insulating and become "dry", unadaptive, and abrasive with age. Rains-Flo GFM Packings dissipate the heat to prevent localized hot spots which result in shaft/sleeve grooving.
  • The "flow" characteristic is really three features. The first is the response of GFM Packings to the shape of the stuffing box. Any irregularities such as shaft/sleeve contour or eccentricity of the sleeve to the stuffing box bore are easily compensated for. The second "flow" characteristic is due to the GFM Packing wearing rather than the shaft. As the packing wears, the gland is adjusted to maintain proper tightness. Eventually the gland will bottom out and a new GFM Ring can be installed. This "Add-A-Ring Maintenance" feature can continue until leakage becomes excessive or the equipment receives other maintenance requiring packing removal. The third "flow" characteristic is the continuous release of stored lubrication throughout the life of Rains-Flo GFM Packings.
  • Rains-Flo GFM Red and Black Rings are a mechanical combination which minimizes extrusion, maximizes gland force transfer to the stuffing box base, and yet adapts to changes in shaft/sleeve condition. The GFM Red Rings contain larger, tougher particles to resist extrusion forces, while the GFM Black Rings contain smaller and more adaptable particles in order to more quickly seat to the shaft/sleeve.

Rains-Flo Sealing System Auxiliaries

Rains-Flo Lyte-Braid Collars

– General purpose collars that have a high strength synthetic core, heavily loaded with a PTFE lubricant. Abrasive resistant, extrusion resistant, withstands high pressure and mild chemical exposure. Typically used at the base of the stuffing box in all but the most severe sealing applications.
Rains-Flo Soft Braid Collars – Soft-braid is the most chemically resistant and has the most long-term resiliency. Typically used as the 2nd collar in tandem collar applications.
Rains-Flo Tuff-Braid Collars – Tuff-Braid is more chemically resistant and has higher strength than Lyte-Braid. These collars are the standard for slurry pump sealing applications.
Rains-Flo Hot Braid Collars – Hot-Braid is used at the stuffing box base in conjunction with high temperature RF-22 GFM Packing. This collar is also capable of high speeds, has good chemical resistance, and should be used with the standard GFM packings in 400oF – 500oF service.
Rains-Flo Cast Closure Rings – (Split and Pinned) These are used for worn or wallowed stuffing box throats. These precision cast two-piece rings can be used to reduce the gap between the shaft OD and the stuffing box base or the throat lantern ring ID.

COMBINATION DIE FORMED PACKING SETS

Engineered packings for specific applications where extreme high pressures, chemicals and high pressures exist. Combining various die formed materials provides the best sealing with the least amount of maintenance. die forming each pressure ring provides the proper density and offers easy installation. These pressure formed packing sets are often furnished with anti-slugging spacers to prevent extrusion. Spacers may be furnished from high tech plastics, PTFE, nylon, alloys, and elastomeric composite materials. The elastomeric composite material spacers are a convex shape. Because of the convex shape, the spacer design enhances sealability of each pressure ring to maintain uniform contact on all sealing areas.
Consult Fluid Sealing Service for technical assistance in designing engineered packing sets for your application.

DIE FORMED PACKING RING/SETS

Pressure formed rings or specified sets are preferred in many applications. Die forming by pressure results in accurate density and precise size of each packing ring for easy installation and minimum gland adjustment. Specify style number, inside and outside diameters, number of rings required per set, and butt or bevel cut. Consult Fluid Sealing Service about your application.

SPIRAL UNITIZED PACKING SETS
Fluid Sealing Service has developed an innovative concept in braided packing sets for use in all reciprocating equipment. Style 242 is made of pure aramid yarns interbraided with a stabilizing core. This unitized set of packings will not separate during storage or installation. The unique spiral unit eliminates the conventional leak path found in multiple ring die-formed sets and retards leakage even when the pump is idle. It is installed as a solid unit and can be used alone or in conjunction with spacers, wear rings or other items normally supplied with conventional die-formed sets.
This unique construction can be used with other styles of braided packing. Consult Fluid Sealing Service for your specific requirements.

LIVE-LOAD PACKING SYSTEM
This system is MACT compliant for valves
Nuclear Certified  -  E.P.R.I. Approved  -  Fireproof per A.P.I. 607 (685)
Guaranteed Emission Free Sealing  -  Long Term Leak Free Sealing

Live-Load Packing Systems as designed by Fluid Sealing Service, can make valves virtually maintenance-free month after month.

Our Live-Load Packing System is designed for critical service valves that are motor-operated or air-actuated ... valves in which response time to stroke is important.

Live-Load ends peaks and valleys in packing performance, curtails dangerous emissions to the atmosphere, and keeps valves installed even 70 years ago in service for years to come.

The system consists of:
Three leak-tight flexible graphite die-formed packing rings and three braided yarn rings determined by service and operational variables.
These rings are self-lubricating, low friction, high purity, and can withstand temps to 5000oF.

A Fluid Sealing Service spacer - a high compressive strength graphite spacer that is more thermally stable than a metal spacer and will not score the stem. Manufactured from 99% pure graphite material, this precision machined split carbon sleeve will effectively reduce the number of rings in a stuffing box. Independent testing indicates that a five ring packing set produces optimum valve sealing.

Stainless Steel Belleville disc springs are utilized to maintain packing compression above the minimum specified sealing pressure as packing relaxes and wears. These stacked arrangements automatically adjust the gland to maintain constant, optimal sealing pressure on the packing set. This prevents leakage due to aging, consolidation or thermal cycling.
A correctly designed and applied live-loaded assembly is capable of storing many times the elastic energy of standard gland bolts.
